Survryed Dec.2003 by Debra Coursey Pitts & son DJ. The first day I went out to start my survey of this cemetery I happened to me a lady named Sarah Dominey who was at the cemetery to clean & decorate the gravesites of her loved ones for Christmas. Sarah as it turns out is the great-grandaughter of John McDonald Stovall & Caroline E.Stovall.She was so gracious as to give me a brief history of the cemetery.According to the history she has , Prairie Grove Community was started approx.1845 and is one of the oldest communities and cemeteries in the county. John & Caroline Stovall settled on 640 acres here along with one loyal slave who chose to stay with them and later even took their family surname to be added to his name. ( in 1850 censes there were 196 slaves & in 1860 there were 686 listed for Angelina Co.) He was Dave Sims who became Dave Stovall Sims. He died in 1924 and is buried beside the Stovall Family. The Stovalls' children were the first to be buried in the cemetery and thus started the cemetery. It is said that all Stovall decendants originated from Bartholomew Stovall who was from France by way of England in the time period of William the Conqueror. The first Sunday in July is Cemetery Reunion Day , held at the church, donations are taken for the upkeep of the cemetery. Thank you Sarah for talking with me. *************************************************************************************** This cemetery is very old , markers are broken, blackened with age and hard to clearly read or just sinking into the soggy ground of this area. There are numerous piles of stones and other signs of forgotten gravesites that I have no way of knowing the identity of. Select photos of this cemetery are also being submitted for online viewing. Any errors are unintentional. **************************************************************************************** Surname, Given Names Birth-Death Dates Misc.info *************************************************************************************** KNAPP,Daniel Capt. 1952-1979 ,Chrisja Daniel 1980-1981 COURTNEY,Birdie 10-1-1907 / 9-5-1910 and Bulah 5-10-1905 / 4-18-1909 ,Leonard J. 9-27-1913 / 10-18-1913 ,Iris Josephine 1-23-1882 / 3-27-1919 w/o W.T.Courtney ,Bessie May 3-22-1913 / 3-24-1913 inf.of W.T.& I.J. ,Vincent 1845-1929 ,Mary 1846-1914 FORD,M.L.(Courtney) 6-7-1874 / 3-22-1892 d/o V.M.& M.J.Courtney HALES,Reuben V. 1907-1975 ,Ruby E. 1913-1998 ,inf.s/o R.& R. 4-18-1933 ,inf. 11-21-1903 / 11-21-1903 inf.of A.M.& Bessie Hales ,Denny 8-31-1897 / 5-6-1934 ,Frankie 4-3-1880 / 1-22-1958 ,M.A. 3-5-1849 / 9-3-1900 w/o W.W.Hales ,Leah 1879-1952 ,Newton J. 1872-1921 ,Emily 8-8-1889 /8-16-1891 d/o W.W.& M.A. ,W.W. 8-24-1846 / 9-1-1917 ,Gradie age 2 yrs.& 6 mon. inf.of N.J.& L.Hales ,Hurley L. 4-11-1914 / 1-5-1955 ,Billie Ruth 1932-1948 photo on marker ,Maxine 1934-1948 photo on marker ,Albert C. 11-1-1885 / 12-2-1936 ,George Wesley 12-9-1925 / 9-19-2002 ,McCutchen 10-31-1877 / 11-1-1952 ,Bessie 1-28-1887 / 12-29-1962 ,Alton M.(Dick) 5-27-1907 / 3-14-1981 ,Willie Mae 10-18-1915 / 3-14-2001 Burns,Lucille HALES 7-4-1909 / no death date GEORGE,Sebren 1916-1918 and Beron 1912-1921 (on same heart shaped stone:Our darlings) ,Cullen B. 4-26-1903 / 1-28-1965 ,Elizabeth 10-17-1867 / 7-18-1923 Mother ,C.B. 1848-1928 Father ,E.M. 5-23-1856 / 8-5-1892 ,S.J. 12-16-1820 / 3-6-1890 w/o J.W. ,Ariola 8-9-1900 / 8-3-1903 d/o C.B.& Elizabeth ,David Manly 10-25-1895 / 10-16-1900 s/o C.B.& Elizabeth ,Effie 7-22-1897 / 9-25-1899 d/o C.B.& Elizabeth ,Solome I. 6-20-1889 / 7-2-1890 ,Rosie HALES 11-19-1883 / 6-22-1972 Mama ,John P. 2-5-1880 / 10-26-1949 ,William Carey 6-9-1894 / 3-15-1965 JACKSON,Betty Jean 8-2-1924 / 10-11-1929 HUGHS,Vida JACKSON 4-24-1905 / 2-24-1986 STOVALL,Martha Smith 1852-1924 ,George Cary 1850-1917 SANFORD,Hixie Boykin 12-28-1896 / 10-19-1988 BOYKIN,Rhoda S. 1-10-1878 / 4-10-1960 SMITH,Annie J. 7-4-1832 / 9-24-1862 w/o Jeptha Smith (this is under large dead tree, facing south, said to be placed here by her slave after dark) DUBOSE,Lillie May 6-6-1897 / 8-24-1899 d/o J.P.& M.E. ,Marie 9-27-1929 / 9-28-1929 d/o Mr.& Mrs.T.P.Dubose ,Grace 11-2-1911 / 7-11-1920 d/o T.P.& M.M.
