Barge Cemetery

near Zavalla, TX

by Bonnie Windsor  &  Jo

Traveling south from the city of Zavalla on US Hwy 69, turn right on FM 1270. This will be the first FM road to the left about a mile out
of town. About 2 miles out take the Barge Cemetery Rd. to the right. The cemetery is at the end of this road.
On July 17, 1886, Laura M Barge died at the age of 7 years and 7 months. A few months before she had asked to be buried under a cedar
tree in her yard. This was the beginning of the Barge Cemetery. The trunk of the tree is still standing though it has died. In later years
Aaron Barge donated one half acre. In 1997 Charles Oliver donated another half acre, bringing the cemetery to its current size.
